Northside Festival - Day 1 (6-16-2011)

I really wasn’t planning on attending the Northside fest this year. I was considering heading to The Governors Ball and maybe meeting up with some friends… But, fate had different plans for me. Turns out that I won a festival badge through the @VoiceStreet. And now that I live in Greenpoint, all of the venues were well within walking distance of each other and from my house. So, on Thursday afternoon, I picked up my badge, along with a totally worthless gift bag, and some free Heineken and was on my way.

My first stop was to Union Pool to see the scary talented Lady Lamb The Beekeeper (aka Aly Spaltro), who performs solo, has a powerful voice, strong guitar chops, and really catchy songs with smart lyrics. Every time I see her play ‘Crane Your Neck’, I have that song in my head for days. There, I hung out with my photography buddy Gretchen Robinette and Michael Tapper who’s the drummer from Yellow Ostrich and happened to be performing the next day alongside Beirut and Sharon Van Etten.

Then I went to Grasslands Gallery to hang out with Kristen from TheMorningAfterPills.com to check out her current favorite, Mr. Dream. I was actually pretty impressed with the band and there was a pretty strong turnout. The venue has gone through a redesign recently, but the lighting is still very dim. I love the backdrop behind the stage at Grasslands, but I wish the lighting was designed better to show it off. I think it’s a missed opportunity.

Anyway, I used a flash with a slow shutter with some pretty good results. The picture of the their bass player, Matt Morello was one of my best shots of the fest… if not of my year so far. Anyway, you can see both galleries from of Lady Lamb The Beekeeper & the Mr. Dream show at TheMorningAfterPills.com
