Starscream @ The Studio at Webster Hall (3/22/2011)

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a show where I paid to get in, but Starscream is always worth seeing and i figured I had nothing else to do thanks to a Netflix Instant outage. But seriously, I’ve seen/shot Starscream three times now, and I really like them. You may remember my mentioning them to a member of Harvey Milk previously. They are getting a lot of exposure due to their appearance on MTV’s Skins. I was considering going to the show without my gear, but considering that one of my favorite shots I’ve taken was of the band, figured that I’d feel like I was missing out by not shooting them. Yep, I can’t just go to a concert and watch a band. At any rate, I knew that I could get the shots posted somewhere and figured that the band might appreciate the extra coverage.

At one point, the crowd started dancing, jumping up and down and shoving each other around. Someone knocked into the back of my head and my nose smacked right up against the back of my camera. Hard. So hard I’m surprised I didn’t come out of it with a bloody nose.

Photographer Richard Gin was there. When I’ve seen him shoot, he sets up 2 remote speedlights on the rear of the stage and gets some cool results. Something I would love to try sometime.

As for me, I was shooting with a straight-on flash with the built in diffuser down on the SB600. For most of the shots, I was at using a 17-55mm f/2.8 at f/5.6 at ISO 640. Shutter speed varied from 0.4 to 1/10 of a sec depending what I was going for. There were a couple of times, I caught Rich’s speedlights in my long exposures and got some interesting results, so thanks Rich.
