Neko Case & Michael Showalter @ Barnes & Noble’s ‘Upstairs At The Square’ (2/24/2011)

I was asked last minute to shoot an in-store appearance of Neko Case & Michael Showalter hosted by Katherine Lanpher the Barnes & Noble in Union Square. Since I was there officially, I pretty much had the run of the place and was free to move about the 4th floor pretty freely. Neko performed 4 songs and Michael Showalter read a few very humorous passages from his book ‘Mr. Funny Pants’. I broke out the 70-300mm but ended up only using one of two of those shots. The 17-35mm f/2.8 did most of the work.

Immediately after the performance, I took photos of Michael and Neko signing books and CDs (and some vinyl) and I was pretty happy with those shots. Afterwards, I talked to Neko briefly and mentioned that I liked her Iron Maiden sneakers that she had worn previously at a Bell House appearance and on Jimmy Fallon. She make a sad face and told me that they met a horrible fate.

I crushed a mouse with them.” Yikes!

So, when I got home, I started to transfer the pics to my iMac, but one of the cards was empty. At first, I thought I had mistakenly grabbed one of my spares, but this wasn’t the case. It’s the first time I’ve ever had an issue with a compact flash card. I was a bit nervous because all of the pics I had taken of Neko and Michael signing autographs were on that card. FUCK!

But instead of paying $39.95 for CardRescue, I went with a free program called PhotoRec. It successfully recovered every file. PhotoRec works on most platforms and is free to download and use. I seriously can’t recommend it enough. Download it here: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
