Yann Tiersen w/Orchestra @ Highline Ballroom (2/18/2011)

My first assignment at Highline Ballroom this year. I love shooting there, because the lighting is usually really good and the security staff is super nice (a big shout-out to Vincent Rispoli and his team). One thing I’m totally not used to is the 2 hour gap between the doors opening and the start of the performances. Standing around for 2 hours can get a little boring. But, fortunately for me, my friend Tom Flaschen came along to keep me company.

Shannon Wright opened for Yann and she reminded me a little of PJ Harvey. Most of the time, her hair was all in her face and didn’t make for a flattering shot, but I managed. Yann Tiersen and his band, (who performed alongside a 13 piece orchestra) played every song from his latest album ‘Dust Lane’. Unfortunately, for me at least, he didn’t play anything from the Amelié Soundtrack. Regardless, it was very pleasant show. I shot with a 17-35mm f/2.8 for the wide angles and the 50mm f/1.4 for some of the close ups of Yann. Check out the coverage (including shots from a second night by Amanda Hatfield) on BrooklynVegan.com
